Abstract:
We discuss the possibility of emerging conscious behaviour in open quantum systems. Our consideration is based on the definition of consciousness as the capability
of a system to model the behaviour of its environment and act accordingly to the model. According to the laws of thermodynamics the total entropy of the learning
system and its environment cannot decrease, unless a quantum measurement is performed on it by external consciousness. This prohibits the emergence of conscious
behaviour in artificial systems. The consideration is illustrated by numerical examples.
