Datatake ERS-2 October 29, 2000 Japan Sea Comment Upwelling near the Primorye coast in the Japan Sea. Upwelling mapping with ERS SAR is based on correlation of the surface roughness and physical and/or biological properties of the upwelled waters. The SAR detects the differences in small-scale sea surface roughness. The upwelled water has lower SST (see AVHRR image) and higher surfactant concentration relative to the surrounding surface water, and it is characterized by a decreased surface roughness (see image intensity profiles A and B) at favorable atmospheric conditions.
