Datatake Terra MODIS Wavelength 858.5 nm Bandwidth 35.0 nm September 04, 2003 at 07:45 West Indian Ocean Madagascar and Mozambique coasts Comment The image reveals several atmospheric internal solitary wave packets. Two large-scale nonlinear wave packets can be seen propagating west and northeast, off Madagascar's and Mozambique's coastlines. The large-scale internal solitary wave packets are made visible by characteristic sea surface roughness patterns, which are due to modulation of Bragg waves associated with wind stress variability on the sea surface, and cloud bands of significant lateral extension, which indicate favourable condensation conditions in the ascending branches of the wave.
