Future of Monsoon Forecasting in India

Abstract:

Monsoons are the source of life for almost half of the world's population living in the tropics. Monsoon rains are essential for collecting drinking water, growing crops, raising livestock and generating electricity. Although the rainy season occurs annually, its onset can vary from year to month, creating serious problems and affecting the lives and property of the poorest small-scale farmers, who produce a third of the world's food but are often the ones who go hungry.

The purpose of the business trip was to facilitate the exchange of the latest knowledge, observations and experience regarding the problem of forecasting the onset and end of the monsoon season on the Indian subcontinent. Interaction with experts from the meteorological community creates the necessary conditions for further progress in understanding the complexity of monsoon processes, the features of the formation of the monsoon core, the interannual variability of its localization and its relationship with the amount of precipitation in various regions of the Indian subcontinent.

Progress in predicting the onset and remission of the Indian monsoon could protect crops, prevent floods, and save lives.
