1998 MARS SURVEYOR PROJECT STATUS REPORT September 23, 1998 John McNamee Mars Surveyor 98 Project Manager Mars Climate Orbiter (At Kennedy Space Center): Reaction Control System (RCS) Rocket Engine Module (REM) functional and flow check testing are progressing and will be completed Thursday as planned. Training and procedure development in preparation for orbiter fueling activities are in process. The orbiter fueling schedule detailed below is at risk due to the proximity of hurricane Georges. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is in hurricane condition III. A meeting of KSC senior management is set for Thursday to determine whether a hurricane condition II alert should be issued. If condition II is declared, the Mars 98 orbiter processing team will be forced to evacuate KSC. Mars Polar Lander (In Denver, Colorado): Inspection of the lander Power Distribution and Drive Unit (PDDU) and Command & Data Handling (C&DH) boxes for cracked diodes and improper coating was completed. Two cracked diodes (out of 496) were found in the PDDU and four cracked diodes (out of 48) were found in the C&DH box. This is significantly fewer than predicted and should allow box re-work to progress on or ahead of the scheduled completion date of October 7. Preparations continue for the shipment of the lander to KSC on October 1.
