July 31, 1998

John McNamee
Mars Surveyor 98 Project Manager

Mars Climate Orbiter:

Orbiter integration and test activities continue to proceed on schedule with the successful completion of the launch and initialization phase flight sequence verification test on the orbiter vehicle with no significant liens.

Mars Polar Lander:

Landed thermal balance testing began with chamber pump down on July 26. The landed "hot" case was completed successfully on Wednesday July 29 with actual vehicle temperatures within 3 degrees Centigrade of predicts. All flight instruments performed nominally during the "hot" case testing. The landed "cold" case is in process with preliminary indications that actual thermal performance is as predicted. Test completion is scheduled for August 2.
