    Today mission controllers attempted twice to contact the Mars Polar Lander. The first attempt to return data through the Mars Relay aboard the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft would have returned a signal at 10:50 a.m. (PST). A second attempt to return data through the Medium Gain Antenna at 9:40 p.m. would have been successful if the lander were both in safe mode and not positioned correctly to communicate.
