25 January 1997

This drawing of Mars was made on January 25, 1997 (Ls=69.40, De=22.49) at 06:50 UT (CM=169.8) by Carlos E. Hernandez (A.L.P.O. Mars Coordinator) using an 8-inch (20-cm) f/7.5 Newtonian reflector at 305x and a Wratten 23A (light red) filter. The North Polar Cap (NPC) appears brilliant (10/10) surrounded by a dark collar consisting of Panchaia, Lemuria, Ierne, and Scandia. The Propontis complex (Castorius Lacus, Euxinus Lacus, and Propontis I and II) appears dark (3/10) on the central meridian (CM). Elysium appears bright to very bright (7-8/10) adjacent to an extremely bright (9/10) morning limb haze (MLH). The Trivium Charontis-Cerberus I complex (3/10) is visible south-preceding (Sp.), Phlegra-Styx (3-4/10) preceding (p.), Chaos (4/10) north (N.) of the Hyblaeus extension (3/10) north-following (Nf.), and Eunostos I (4/10) south-following (Sf.) Elysium. Cebrenia appears dull (5/10) N. of Elysium. An extremely bright (9/10) evening limb haze (ELH) is visible with projections over Arcadia and Amazonis, from north to south respectively. Mare Sirenum appears dark p. the CM towards the southern limb with Titanum Sinus at its following border. Mare Cimmerium appears dark (3/10) f. the CM apparently connected to Mare Sirenum at its preceding end. An extremely bright (9/10) southern limb haze (SLH) is visible.
