Mars Global Surveyor

Mars Orbiter Camera

MGS MOC Releases MOC2-143 to MOC2-162, 19 July 1999

The last two weeks of July 1999 mark several very special anniversaries in history of planetary exploration. The first humans ever to walk on another world did so 30 years ago on July 20, 1969. About a week later, the Mariner 6 and Mariner 7 spacecraft flew past Mars and obtained some of the earliest detailed pictures of the southern equatorial and polar regions of the red planet. July 20th is also the 23rd anniversary of the Viking 1 landing in Chryse Planitia.

In honor of these anniversaries, and to mark the occasion of the Fifth International Conference on Mars--being held this week in Pasadena, California--the Mars Global Surveyor Mars Orbiter Camera Team presents this collection of 20 pictures that illustrate the range of topics and geologic features that the camera has been exploring since its arrival in September 1997. All pictures shown here were taken in 1998 and 1999.
