Mars Orbiter Camera Update: 19 October 1998
The Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) remains powered off until the Mapping Phase of the mission begins in late-March 1999. The MOC science team is examining the results of the first year of operations (mid-September 1997 to mid-September 1998). Malin Space Science Systems is preparing the data for permanent archive with the NASA Planetary Data System.A highlight of the MOC science results presented by MSSS at the First International Conference on Mars Polar Science and Exploration in Houston, Texas, on October 19, 1998, is shown here. Additional MGS MOC images of the martian polar regions can be accessed via the MSSS MOC Mars polar image archive.
Malin Space Science Systems and the California Institute of Technology built the MOC using spare hardware from the Mars Observer mission. MSSS operates the camera from its facilities in San Diego, CA. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Mars Surveyor Operations Project operates the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft with its industrial partner, Lockheed Martin Astronautics, from facilities in Pasadena, CA and Denver, CO.
