"Cosmic ray origin: current status of the problem"

E.G. Berezhko (Yu.G.Shafer Institute of Cosmophysical Research and Aeronomy)

Abstract:

Cosmic ray (CR) origin problem is considered. CR acceleration (generation) at the shocks, produced by supernova explosions, and the properties of nonthermal emission generated by CRs accelerated in supernova remnants are detaily discussed. It is shown that calculations performed within nonlinear kinetic theory reasonably well explain the observed properties of nonthermal emission from supernova remnants that has to be considered as the evidence of efficient CR production in supernova remnants accompanied by considerable magnetic field amplification. Due to magnetic field amplification CR acceleration in supernova remnants provide the formation of the observed galactic CR spectrum up to the energy 10**17 eV. Possible scenarios of the formation of CR spectrum at energies above 10**17 eV are briefly discussed.
