"Methods for an assessment of status and dynamics of boreal forests using earth observation data"

Abstract:
The presentation is aimed to review results of research and developments by the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Space Research Institute in order to develop methods to use Earth observation data in optical domain for boreal forests monitoring with focus on qualitative and quantitative characterisation of forest ecosystems, detection and assessment of natural and anthropogenic forest disturbances. The possibilities for combine use of spectral, spectral-temporal and spectral-angular properties of reflected radiation as measured by satellite sensors are considered for forest and other terrestrial ecosystems classification and their parameters assessment. The methods of different spatial and temporal resolution satellite data primary processing and thematic analysis to perform forest monitoring on global, continental and local level are also subject of presentation.
