"Molecular synthesis in recombinating impact plasma"

G.G. Managadze (SRI RAS)

Abstract:

Ions of organic molecules, polymers and also multi-charge hydrocarbon ions were synthesized and recorded with the help of a TOF mass analyzer as a result of laboratory experiments on the real time modeling of a hypervelocity impact.

The hypervelocity impact (80 km/s) of micrometeorites with an inorganic target was simulated by the laser operating in the Q - switch mode. Laser provided the power density 109 - 1011 W/cm2, spot diameter 30÷150 mkm, pulse duration 7-10 ns, and electron temperature of the laser plasma  ~ 105 – 106 ˚Ê.

It is shown, that synthesis of molecular lons takes place predominantly in high temperature plasma during the free flight of ions, formed at the stage of the plasma cooling and recombination, in case if the plasma  has been first completely atomized and ionized. This process has a relatively high yield only for carbon target.

The experimental results obtained show the possibility of abiogenous synthesis of organic molecules, in the processes of hypervelocity impacts on the primitive Earth’s surface during its meteor bombardment and in hypervelocity collisions of dust  particles in Interstellar clouds.
